Mr Craig Ferguson – South Lanarkshire College – Head of Facilities and Health and Safety

The Challenge
Working on the third floor of South Lanarkshire College’s main campus building situated at the Scottish Enterprise Technology Park in East Kilbride, the works comprised the conversion of two existing IT teaching rooms into an extended dining and break-out space. The works mainly comprised of downtakings, new partitioning, floor, wall and ceiling finishes and minor alterations to existing mechanical and electrical services. Bespoke curved ceiling details and stainless steel and timber balustrades also featured. The works were tendered to be carried out over a 7 week period whilst the college was closed for summer. The works were postponed and instructed to be carried out during October / November with a full complement of staff and students present and not to be disturbed or disrupted by the works.

The Solution
Careful planning and very close management and liaison with the Client’s Estates Management Team. Materials and debris delivered / removed early mornings and evenings to prevent disruption. Area fully hoarded and closely maintained with regular cleaning to prevent construction dust being trafficked into the operating areas of the college. Adapting to work within a live college environment and rising to the resultant and associated challenges.

The Result
The project was successfully handed over within a reduced period of 5 weeks despite the increased working restrictions and without any disruption to staff or students. The client was delighted with the outcome and has since placed orders for two further projects with GMACK.
